Walker Evans described William Christenberry’s three-inch-square photographs of Alabama as “perfect little poems.” Veteran photographer Christenberry (b.1936), whose work is now featured in a major retrospective at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, has returned to his native Alabama every year since 1968 to photograph the landmarks of his childhood. These portraits of a changing landscape take as their protagonists the vernacular architecture of the rural South. |
