Miles Gertler
Miles Gertler translates his background in architecture and design into a visual arts practice rooted in cultural and technological discourse. Through digital collage, Gertler intervenes in found imagery of landscapes, geological formations, and communities to create uniquely constructed images that allow the viewer to consider a new world order. Gertler’s elegant and confounding images transport the viewer to alternate realities where the historied iconographies of the East and West meet.
After studying architecture at the University of Waterloo and Princeton University, Gertler and Spanish architect, Igor Bragado, co-founded the conceptual design office Common Accounts. Common Accounts channels its research on techno-political environments in its design practice, which spans in scale from functional household objects to monumental architectural propositions in construction and academia.
Miles Gertler’s work was selected by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Shumon Basar, and Douglas Coupland for inclusion in their 2019-2020 exhibition, Age of You, at MOCA, Toronto, also shown at Art Jameel in Dubai in 2021. In 2018 Hamed Khosravi, Taneha Bacchin and Filippo LaFleur commissioned Gertler to produce a series of images illustrating a speculative, post-human future for the Port of Rotterdam for the expanded program of the Dutch Pavilion (Work, Body, Leisure, curated by Marina Verzier Otero) at the Venice Biennale in Architecture. Gertler contributed to Imago Mundi (Central-Eastern Canada: Out of the Bush Garden, 2017- 2018), presented by the Fondazione Benetton in Venice and Toronto. The work of Miles Gertler has been the subject of two solo exhibitions, Rare Item (2017) and Superlith & Seven (2016), at Corkin Gallery. Gertler has remained active in academia, teaching at Cornell, the University of Waterloo, and the University of Toronto. Miles Gertler has been represented by Corkin Gallery since 2016.
