"‘Sunday Morning’ was quite deliberately a riff on the Wallace Stevens poem; that is if one can create a riff on something so magnificently complex, rich and allusive. Embarrassing to say, we painters seem to never fear to tread where even angels do. The painting I completed contains, like a rebus, many of the objects and places Stevens created, at least as they bloomed in my head. Teasing sometimes, compelling at others, these elements had to be comprehended by a space, and light, that could seem plausible. I don’t mind confessing that this was a struggle, nor declaring some pride in what I managed. I’m pretty sure that Stevens is not through with me yet."
