We are pleased to present the exhibition of Barbara Astman: Then and Now II on Saturday 1 October, 2016 from 3-6pm

Then and Now II is a summary exhibition of the career of Barbara Astman with works from 1971 to 2015. Among the first to explore technological practices and concepts, key signifiers in contemporary art, Barbara Astman merges technology with the hand-made. Her work employs novelty items, periodicals, and household wares, imbuing them with multiple meaning. In her early performative works, her self-portraits are carefully choreographed, removing her image from reality.

Her practice explore issues of glass ceilings, gender, and contemporary consumer culture, and how media informs current thinking. Astman dematerializes the material and makes personal the impersonal, exploring the role objects play in forming personal and collective histories. Astman studied at the Rochester Institute of Technology and emigrated to Toronto in the early 1970’s. She is currently a professor at OCAD University.
